Adam and Mardessa came into the house carrying many bags of groceries.

Verdie was at the sink washing vegetables.

Patricia was putting the beers into three coolers of ice.

They shared hellos.

“Where’s lazy boy?” Adam asked. “He’s hiding now that it’s time to work?

Verdie shook her head, “That’s not nice. He took your grandmother to Rich’s to get a wig. Then by her place to get the food she made for the party.”

“Better him than me.”

Verdie grinned.

Adam came behind his mother and kissed her on the cheek. “Mother, I am going to be mayor.”

“I have no doubt.”

“And this Christmas party, Dad’s party, should seal it. I have invited some big wigs. We doing it.”

Mardessa came in her cream dress that Verdie just loved, but her bitterness to the young woman kept her from saying it. Her eyes, though, betrayed her.

“You like?” Mardessa twirled. I got it on sale.”

“It is nice.”

“$1700. Dior.”

“Hmm.”

“And I bought this apron from Louis Vutton.”

“Alrighty then.”

“I am ready for this. It’s going to be great.”

“Yes ma’am, it should be.”

“I already set out the appetizers. We are just about ready to get this going.”

Mardessa’s smile was the biggest and brightest Verdie has seen on the young lady since the day Mardessa married her son.

Mardessa sorted through all of the utensils in the draws, and then cupboards for ingredients. She was prepping her kitchen in impressive fashion, even Verdie had to admit.

Aunt BeBe had come early to offer help. She had been far from her sister since Thanksgiving. She just could not come up with the right words to console her sister. Teddy’s death hit Bebe hard as well; she loved the way he loved her sister, and could never find that love for herself.

Verdie was observing how Mardessa prepared the food for the evening. She tried not to be in the way or be critical, but she was wide-eyed and analytical. She quietly watched Mardessa use a full bottle of jelly and no hot sauce on the drumettes; but when she saw her put Ranch dressing in the deviled eggs she had to ask.

“What?” Mardessa asked first; she could almost hear the thoughts in her mother-in-law’s head.

“That’s interesting. Ranch?”

“It’s my secret ingredient. Now you know. I may have to kill you,” she giggled.

“Oh, I won’t tell.”

Verdie and Bebe moved through the kitchen and to the living room.

Bebe just had to ask, “Ah, and why is there another woman in your kitchen?”

“Ah uh, don’t you dip into this, okay? I am getting a rest this year.”

“Really now?”

“Silent night from you.”
